Back in the late aughts Victory Gardens were all over the place, remember? Let’s look back to that time in aught-seven when “guerrilla gardeners” took over the land in front of some lady’s apartment complex at Fulton and Stanyan and just started gardening.
It was beautiful vandalism, man. The venture had lots of support from the City and NGOs, that’s for sure. But things didn’t work out.

Remember when our San Francisco Giants won the World Series the time before last?
It was back in 2010. Good times. I celebrated by climbing on top of the Memphis Minnie’s Barbeque Joint And Smokehouse Ford van parked on the street in the Lower Haight.
There I was, looking fierce bouncing up and down in my little black dress and orange pumps, along with bunch of other people.* We few, we Band of Brothers, we Baseball Furies.
Anyway, as the above link to Haighteration shows, the Big Pig, she got messed up.
But here she is back on the road in 2013, wavy roof panels and all:

I don’t know, I think this ride is worth more than it would have been without the battle scars from aught-ten.
I think this rig is now a historic artifact worthy of preservation.

*Oh, not really. Actually, after watching on a friend’s big screen (’cause I don’t I have cable ’cause I want the Comcast monopoly to die die die) I had to ride my bike on up to Pac Heights. The city was electric, all over, not just in the Mission and in the Haights.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Oct. 30, 2012 — When the San Francisco Giants parade thru the city October 31, the Verizon Wireless will be ready to handle the frenzy of calls, cell phone picture and video messages and texts from the one million excited fans expected to attend.
The company has significantly increased capacity on its voice and 4G LTE data network in downtown San Francisco and at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Verizon Wireless’ network is ready to handle more voice and data traffic than that at the busiest time on a normal day.
“From an emergency management perspective, I really appreciate all the background work Verizon has done to increase network access from cell phones. We view this as a key facet of the larger public safety plan,” said Anne Kronenberg, executive director of the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management.
As part of Verizon Wireless’ preparation for the parade, the company will have temporary cell sites, known as Cells on Wheels (COWs), deployed near the parade route to handle increased network traffic. These sites can process thousands of calls and data transmissions each hour and are designed for use at special events that demand additional network capacity. They will be deployed to downtown locations.
“We have made a significant investment in network improvements in preparation for this major event,” said Russ Preite, region president for Verizon Wireless. “Our customers will be talking, texting, navigating and e-mailing with their wireless devices at a fast pace. We are prepared, as we were with the SF Giants 2012 playoff and World Series home games, to handle more traffic and to provide the reliable, high-quality service our customers expect from Verizon Wireless.”
Verizon Wireless’ network reliability is supported by industry-leading redundancy and maintenance measures, including back-up power at most facilities. For additional reliability, generators are installed at all switching facilities and many cell site locations.

“As of this evening, all the votes have been counted in District 2 by the San Francisco Department of Elections and we have won the District 2 Supervisor election. With tonight’s victory, we now turn our immediate attention to preparing for office in January. Our transition team is in place, and I will be meeting with District 2 Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier tomorrow to kick-start the transition process. I will also finalize the hiring of my City Hall staff within the next week.
I would like to acknowledge and thank all of my opponents – Kat Anderson, Abraham Simmons, Barbara Berwick, Janet Reilly, and Vilma Guinto Peoro – for a very exciting and challenging campaign. They are dedicated and valued public servants who are each committed to the people and neighborhoods of District 2, and I look forward to working with all of them in the future.
While the past few weeks have been challenging as the vote count continued after Election Day, I fully recognize the need for a transparent and democratic electoral process – as such, I want to thank the leadership and staff of San Francisco’s Department of Elections for their dedication and diligence in completing this difficult task.
I would also like to personally thank all of those individuals that supported my campaign, beginning with Sheriff Michael Hennessey and in particular Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier and Supervisor Sean Elsbernd. This was the scene last night at Tosca, which was loaded to the rafters during the celebration of the re-election of Dennis Jose Herrera as City Attorney of San Francisco. He won with a Saddam Hussein-like 96% of the vote.
After seeing who was there at the victory party and the gauging the mood of the crowd, you gotta consider DH the front-runner in the race to become the next mayor of San Francisco.
Anyway, I’ve seen momentum before. DH has it, ’nuff said.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera today applauded a move by Kellogg to end its controversial recent marketing practice of claiming that Cocoa Krispies and other cereal products “now helps support your child’s immunity.”
On Oct. 27, Herrera invoked his consumer protection authority under California’s Unfair Competition Law in a letter to the president and CEO of the Battle Creek, Mich.-based company in which the City Attorney demanded substantiation for the health claims. Boxes of cereal prominently boasting the alleged immunity benefit had reportedly begun to appear on the shelves of San Francisco stores against the backdrop of heightened concerns about a potential swine flu epidemic. In his letter last week, Herrera wrote, “The Immunity Claims may also mislead parents into believing that serving this sugary cereal will actually boost their child’s immunity, leaving parents less likely to take more productive steps to protect their children’s health.”
In response to Kellogg’s announcement today, City Attorney Herrera issued the following statement:
“I am gratified that Kellogg listened to our concerns, and recognized the obligation we all have to convey accurate information in the context of a serious public health concern like swine flu. I know many critics viewed this as a cynical marketing ploy to prey on parents’ fears about their kids’ health, to sell sugary cereal as some kind of new health food. Notwithstanding the health benefits of vitamins, prudence and integrity demanded this step, and I’m glad Kellogg took it.”
