Virgin America Makes a Deal with Uber Cab – Earn Air Miles While on the Ground, or Something

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

Sorry Lyft. It turns out that it’s Uber what’s “revolutionizing personal transportation” these days. See below.

I’m a cowboy/ With a pink ‘stache I ride/ Wanted/ Dead or alive:

All right, now back to Uber. I think they’re legal now. Good for them!

(But Virgin, please don’t let San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee find out about the whole “Silicon Valley’s Airline” thing – you know, he’s having a bad year.)

“Virgin America Hitches A Ride With Uber:  First-ever Uber Frequent Flyer Partnership Offers A Seamless, Connected Travel Experience From Ride To Roll - Silicon Valley’s Airline Offers Elevate® Frequent Flyer Benefits to New Uber Users

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept.12, 2012 — Virgin America, the award-winning California-based airline, announces today that it has partnered with Uber, the company revolutionizing personal transportation, to offer Virgin America’s Elevate® frequent flyer program members the ability to earn Elevate points when they complete their first ride with Uber.  As of today, Elevate frequent flyer members who are new to Uber can sign-up (on the Uber website or through the Uber app) with their Elevate membership number and will be awarded 800 Elevate reward points upon completion of their first Uber ride.  To celebrate the partnership, as of today, Virgin America and Uber will also be giving one winner a week a free domestic roundtrip on Virgin America and $500 in Uber ride credits until October 2, 2012.  More information on the “Ride with Us, Roll with Uber” sweepstakes*, official rules and other details are available at: http://vgn.am/VXuber

“As two companies known for looking at ways to improve and reinvent the travel experience, we’re pleased to partner with Uber to offer travelers a new option for ground travel that fits their busy, connected lifestyles,” said Luanne Calvert, Vice President of Marketing at Virgin America.  ”Our new partnership with Uber provides our frequent flyers with a more connected, seamless travel experience – from the air to the ground.”

The latest partnership with Uber offers Virgin America’s tech-forward guests more options for ground travel during their business trip or leisure getaway. Uber harnesses the latest technology to provide an innovative on-demand car service that is unique in the marketplace.  Since its launch in 2007, Virgin America has grown a passionate following of flyers for its topnotch guest service and unique amenities. The airline’s Elevate frequent flyer program was among the first U.S. loyalty programs to offer dynamic reward pricing – with the ability for guests to redeem reward points for any unsold seat – on any flight, at any time. Earlier this summer, Virgin America announced a suite of enhancements to its Elevate program – including new Elevate Gold and Elevate Silver status levels with a host of traveler perks and enhanced social rewards for virtual check-ins.  Elevate program details can be viewed on the airline’s website at: www.virginamerica.com/elevate

And then, all hail VA, etc, after the jump

San Francisco is So Rich We Can Afford to Light Up the Giant Market Street “VIRGIN” Sign in Perpetuity?

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Here’s the reverse-angle, at night, from Market Street near the Union Square Apple Store.

It’s the giant neon sign for our long-closed Virgin Megastore:

Now didn’t I talk about this just last month? So why is this sign still burning brightly 24-7? There’s no actual Megasto any mo, right? Has this store sign become an ad for the Virgin Empire? Does somebody turn the sign off on Christmas to honor the Baby Jesus ‘n stuff? Does the City and County of San Francisco pay for the juice to power it?

I know not.

The juice, the precious juice

Uh, Who Pays for the Electricity to Power the Giant VIRGIN Sign on the Side of Our Long-Shutdown Virgin Megastore?

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

You see, our world-class City (go ahead, Google the terms ”ed lee” “world class” right now) used to have a world-class Virgin Megastore at the world-class intersection of world-class Market Street and world-class Stockton Street.

But then our Virgin reka sto shut down, a while ago, actually.

But now the sign is still burning brightly, wasting the electricity that San Francisco stole from the rest of California fair and square back when Hetch Hetchy got built.

Bon courage, Virgin Megastore sign.

May you shine forever.

Grand Opening of XXI Forever Store at Stockton and Market a Huge Success

Monday, January 9th, 2012

See? Look at all these people lining up Saturday morning to get into the new Forever 21 (formerly the Virgin MegaStore) right across the street from the Union Square Apple Store:

Hey, is that billionaire Forever 21 Founder Jin Sook Chang handing out gift cards camera right? I think so, but I don’t know.

Boy, if only this store opening were as big a deal as the new Pearl’s Deluxe Burgers two blocks up the street, then the Mayor would have been there and everything…

It’s Time Again for Virgin America Day at AT&T Park – Lots of Giants Promotions Plus a Red City Hall

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Well it’s the talk of the townAugust 6, 2011 is Virgin America Day at AT&T Park, so all attendees will get a Virgin America 2 for 1 flight voucher. So if you’re into the Phillies…

But dynamic pricing appears to be at work, so don’t be looking for any of those $1 seats (that come with $10 in fees) that the Giants offer sometimes.

And, oh yes, August 8th, 2011 is Virgin America Day in the 415, so that’s why City Hall will turn red at night for a few days. (Just a guess, but I don’t know how else you’ll be able to tell it’s VA Day 11.)

And Virgin A will is a having a $49 a ticket sale on some flights. All the deets, and there are plenty, are below and after the jump.

Horrible Filmed-in-San Francisco TV Show “Love Bites” Debuts on NBC – It’s Worse than “Trauma”

Monday, June 6th, 2011

For some reason, the NBC just loves shooting bad television shows, ones with with horrible ratings, in the 415.

Comes now, Love Bites, which just had its national debut on June 2. It’s terrible.

But it’s been filmed (or taped or whatever) in town, so you might want to check it out for that reason alone. (Well, the first ep. had three vignettes, of which only the second is set in S.F.) Every scene from that segment practically screams “we made this on location!”

So you’ll see plenty of shots of the T/A Building and Belvedere Alley in Cole Valley:

Here’s the reaction:

“The long-delayed premiere of NBC’s anthology romantic comedy, “Love Bites,” failed to meet even the lowest expectations Thursday night.”

Ouch.

Check it out yourself here starting at 1:50. Yish.

Maybe it could be best described as a television romcom, like Friends except sexier and not funny.

So, does it make sense to shoot TV shows on location in San Francisco these days?

No, it does not.

SFO’s New Terminal Two Will Be “Sustainable?” Sign Up Now For the T2 Kick-Off on April 9th – Party With 11 Thin White People

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Here are the bus ads around town these days.

See? Terminal 2 has arrived. April, 2011

Now, is this something to get excited about?

Well, as always, You Make The Call. Hey, why not show up for the FREE SFO T2 Community Open House on Saturday, April 9th, 2011 and decide for yourself.

But hurry, they’re running out of the tickets that you all will need to get in. Check it:

(As promised, there are 11 thin White People on the invite page. Count them for yourself, why not? Where’s Waldo ‘n stuff.)

As you might have expected, Inside Scoop’s Paolo Lucchesi is all over the food sitch at our new T2. All’s I can say is that it all should be pretty pricey, but, prove me wrong, SFO, prove me wrong.

Now, leaving aside the big picture of labeling anything to do with jet travel sustainable,* I’m a little baffled as to how a “cage-free” egg is a “sustainable” egg, but oh well.

All the deets:

Concessions Program

The airport expects its food and beverage tenants to provide sustainable food to the greatest extent possible.  Expectations include using:
  • organic, local products
  • organic or natural meats
  • rBST-free dairy products
  • cage-free antibiotic eggs
  • sustainable seafood
  • fairly traded organic coffee
  • non-modified agricultural products
  • no artificial color, flavor or additives
  • non-hydrogenated oils
  • biodegradable to-go containers and utensils
  • compostable bio-resin or paper bottles for water
  • low- or no-phosphate detergents.

As with other tenants, SFO’s concession tenants are encouraged to use green building materials for their facilities and will be required to recycle and compost.”

O.K. fine.

I don’t know, I’m used to hearing all this overblown stuff from SFO. So it’s like yes, SFO  was ready for the long-delayed Airbus A380 superjumbo, but so what. And yes, Lufthansa will soon be using an A380 from Frankfurt daily, but it burns more fuel than the Boeing 747 it’s replacing, right? Well, the Mayor’s Office and SFO both reported that one wrong. Oh and then QANTAS was supposed to start flying A380s in and out of Millbrae, but, instead, they’re going to bug out of NorCal entirely due to a little corporate welfare (like 3 mil., something like that) from Texas, so maybe the Mayor’s Office and SFO were, once again, wrong/insanely optimistic about that as well?

Remembering when the T2 construction site was a vast ocean of free parking. Good times.

(Man, are they still flying three-decade-out-of-production DC9′s out of SFO? Or that’s a baby McDonnell Douglas MD-80 in the upper left? Can’t tell. No matter, flying dinosaurs they are regardless.)

So, we had a Terminal 2, then we shut it down, and now we’re opening it again. O.K.

Meh.

Make that super-meh.

*Cheap international air travel using relatively cheap dino-juice is “sustainable?” Really? And instead of bringing food to the people, ’cause that’s unsustainable ‘n stuff, we’re bringing people to the food?

All the deets here and after the jump.

SFO: Ask about our recomposure zone!”**

**Srsly. (Call us when the shuttle lands, SFO.)

Hollywood Comes to the Haight – NBC’s Love Bites Begins Filming Near Cole Valley

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Remember NBC’s Trauma? Remember what a looser(sp) it looked like from the get-go? Well, NBC is back for some more abuse – they‘ve just started are continuing to film the pilot for Love Bites on Belvedere in the Haight Ashbury District. Who knows, it might be watchable.

You’ve heard of the 40-Year-Old-Virgin? Well Becki Newton will be the 32-year-old virgin:

“The romantic dramedy, from “Sex and the City” alumna Cindy Chupack, is in the vein of anthology series “Love, American Style” and chronicles several loosely connected, modern stories of love, sex, marriage and dating. Becki Newton will play one of two permanent cast members, Annie, an optimistic, infectiously bubbly social worker who is a virgin.”

Oh, here she is:

NBC

And here’s the mise-en-scene this afternoon:

All the action seems to be focusing on 120 Belvedere Alley, mas o menos.

This little bit of Hollywood magic should wrap by 3:00 AM(!) Thursday morning.

Why are San Francisco’s New “Low-Cost” Airlines More Expensive than Regular Old Airlines?

Monday, March 1st, 2010

You know the JetBlue and the Virgin America, right? Let’s review:

JetBlue Airways is an American low-cost airline…”

Virgin America, Inc. is a United States-based low-cost airline…”

Well, check out what the suits attending the American Association of Advertising Agencies’ Transformation 2010 convention at the Hilton San Francisco Union Sqaure are paying to fly in from and back to the Big Apple, assuming they’re stuck in the coach section during this Great Recession:

See that? United, Delta, American and Continental all were quoting airfares less than $300, and the ”low-cost airlines” were the most expensive.

Perhaps sexy new Virgin America and JetBlue should be called premium airlines these days?

Just asking…
