How would you like to volunteer as a docent helping out with the new-school / old-school E-line on October 6-7, 2012?
First, some background about how busy the 415 will be this weekend:
“Looking at what’s scheduled for that weekend, there might not be room in the city for many more people, much less cars. First, there’s the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park, a three-day event that drew about 800,000 people last year. That Sunday afternoon, the 49ers play the Buffalo Bills at Candlestick Park, while the Giants are hoping for weekend playoff games at AT&T Park, all guaranteed sellouts. About 60,000 people typically attend the Castro Street Fair, scheduled for that Sunday, while thousands more will jam North Beach for the annual Italian Heritage Parade at 12:30 on the same day. A different crowd will probably be at the Burning Man Decompression street fair, also that Sunday afternoon. To add to the fun, two mega cruise ships are expected to dock at Pier 35 over the weekend, disgorging thousands more tourists. Then, of course, there’s Fleet Week, which brings thousands of sailors and as many as a million visitors to the waterfront for the weekend.”
So you’ll be needed to help out all the visitors moving around on the Twin Torpedos, streetcars 1006 and 1008:
“We need several more docents to work the stops along the E-line on October 6 and 7, helping riders find the right platform and providing information about the service. We have docent books prepared by Paul Lucas, so it’s easy to learn what to do. If you’re interested, send us an email and we’ll get back to you.”

I don’t know what to make of this image below.
Is it a portion of yesterday’s Sing Tao Daily? (And, if so, wouldn’t that please Caroline Chen of the SF Weekly?)
And does it have some bons mots from Chinatown ward healer Rose Pak and former Mayor Willie Brown?
And does it concern their reactions to the San Francisco Ethics Commission coming down hard on defunct (or maybe not-so-defunct after all) Run Ed Run and area attorney Enrique Pearce?

Exhibit A, from Rose Pak, on the topic of the recent statements from San Francisco Ethics Commission Executive Director John St. Croix:
“He doesn’t even know the U.S. Constitution. I don’t know how he does his job. How can you deprive people of their rights to volunteer for a campaign? It is unheard in history that if someone enters the race, those who helped him before are not allowed to help him again,” said Pak.

”Former Mayor Willie Brown said St. Croix obviously does not understand what democracy is about. His anti-Ed Lee position has disqualified himself for his post. “When you announce your candidacy, I will not be able to support you. This is just unbelievable,” said Brown.”
(Keep in mind when you hear allegations of constitutionality and whatnot, that Willie Brown went to UC Hastings School of Law and Enrique Pearce and Mayor Ed Lee both attended UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall.)

Oh, how about this crude translation? It’s the best I can do right now:
“In response to the letter from San Francisco Ethics Commission Director John St. Croix, supporters of Ed Lee for Mayor reprimanded St. Croix for actions being based on nothing. They also questioned his qualification for the position.
Chinese Chamber of Commerce consultant Rose Pak described it the biggest joke of the world. She said it is full of nonsense. He didn’t know what he’s talking about. “He doesn’t even know the U.S. Constitution. I don’t know how he does his job. How can you deprive people of their rights to volunteer for a campaign? Enrique Pearce had consulted St. Croix. However, the latter said differently afterwards. *Speaking of Willie Brown (who still writes for the San Francisco Chronicle) and Rose Pak (who used to write for the San Francisco Chronicle), here’s a bit (in the San Francisco Chronicle) from Willie on Rose circa April 2011:
“Holding court at the party for the opening of the new airport terminal, Rose was seated at the table with interim Mayor Ed Lee and his wife, Anita, and a host of other local officials.
“I want every one of you to call his office and tell him he should run for mayor,” Rose told the table. “And do it right away so that there’s no misunderstanding.”
Then she turned to the architect David Gensler.
“Didn’t you do this terminal?” she asked.
“Yes,” he said.
“Didn’t you remodel this terminal before?”
“Yes,” he said.
“Then your firm should raise a million dollars for his election campaign.”
Poor Gensler, he didn’t know what hit him.”

Representatives of the California Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco Botanical Garden Society, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, San Francisco Parks Trust and affiliated community groups will be on hand at the Conservatory of Flowers to provide information about volunteer opportunities in Golden Gate Park. The fair is a one stop shop for an exciting and meaningful way to meet new people, pursue lifelong passions, educate the public and lend a helping hand in one of the Bay Area’s most beautiful parks! Volunteering at the Conservatory of Flowers is a great way to learn more about tropical plants, meet people with similar interests and share your knowledge and enthusiasm for plants with visitors. We invite you to become a greeter, docent, horticultural volunteer or a children’s Jungle Guide.
Volunteer opportunities
Greeters welcome visitors, check tickets and answer general questions.*
Gift Shop volunteers sell souvenirs to visitors in our Gift Shop in the Special Exhibits Gallery.
Docents provide visitors with information about the plant collections, the Conservatory, and provide guided tours.
Horticultural volunteers work directly with our plant collections and Nursery Specialists.*
Children’s Jungle Guides lead 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes on scheduled tours through the Conservatory.
Young Ambassadors are volunteers from high schools and colleges who staff the “Young Explorers Adventure Carts” for children.
Volunteer requirements
The Conservatory is looking for volunteers who can commit to working at least twice a month, or approximately 6 hours a month.
All volunteers are required to have an interview with the Director of Volunteer Services- Erika Frank, complete an application, and go through our Training Program (depending on the position). We provide our volunteers with the training they need for their position, along with ongoing educational and social programs that promote a positive volunteer experience.
We appreciate our volunteers and invite you to join our dedicated and fun group.

Our federal government wants to stimulate the economy, so the NIH is announcing that they’re giving a boatload of money to Kaiser and UCSF for the Kaiser Permanente Research Program on Genes, Environment, and Health (RPGEH). Will you volunteer?

OAKLAND, Calif. and SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 12 – The Kaiser Permanente Research Program on Genes, Environment, and Health (RPGEH) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have been awarded $24.8 million over two years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to create a new resource for studying disease, health, and aging.
With this support, Kaiser Permanente’s RPGEH and UCSF will conduct a genome-wide analysis of DNA samples from 100,000 Kaiser Permanente members from Northern California who have volunteered to join the RPGEH. This new and detailed genetic information – which has never before been generated on such a large and diverse population – will be linked to decades of historical clinical and other health-related information on these participants, taken from health surveys and the Kaiser Permanente electronic health record, the world’s largest civilian electronic health record. Environmental information will also be included in the new resource, such as information about air and water quality, proximity to parks and healthy foods, and much more. The resulting resource will give researchers an entirely new platform for studying genetic and environmental influences over time on a wide variety of health conditions, across diverse populations.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the NIH, was the key driver for the grant, in part because the average age of those whose DNA will be genotyped is 65. “A body of research tells us that both genes and environmental factors influence how we age,” explains NIA director Richard J. Hodes, MD. “We are very excited about the opportunity to develop this extraordinary database in an older population, to facilitate studies of gene-environment interaction as determinants of health, disease, and longevity.”
The UCSF Institute for Human Genetics is the partner on the project and will perform the actual genotyping. Grant funds will be shared by both institutions.
