Why are We Lowering Our Flags Today for Super Cracker Senator Robert Byrd?

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Flags are lowered about town today for Robert Byrd, the U.S. Senator who favored any and all bridges to nowhere (provided that Nowhere began or ended in the state of West Virginia.) Now, let’s hear from Bill Clinton:

They mention that he once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, and what does that mean? I’ll tell you what it means,” Clinton said. “He was a country boy from the hills and hollows of West Virginia. He was trying to get elected.”

O.K., but wasn’t it Robert Byrd who created and signed up the entire chapter? Yes, actually. Are all “country boy[s] from the hills and hollows of West Virginia” Klan members? No, actually. Not even back during WWII.

The scene today and last Saturday:

Oh, and speaking of WWII, what about this?

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side … Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

Now, I’m not sure when Bob Byrd made that statement but it was some time during that war when black pilots in propeller planes were taking on German jets over Europe. Is that why he boycotted WWII?

And, as far as “trying to get elected” is concerned, the only election he won during his “fleeting” association with the KKK was the Kleagle office of the chapter he started.

When you’re 12-stepping away from your past, you need to come clean. Otherwise it doesn’t work.

So, Why are We Lowering Our Flags Today for Super Cracker Senator Robert Byrd?

Oh well.

WhyTuesdaySF.org – OMG, Alex Tourk is Behind a Program NOT Called Something-Connect

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Alex Tourk, a lobbyist and head of Ground Floors Public Affairs, is the official proponent of the proposed Saturday Voting Act. Alls he needs is about seven thousand signatures and he’ll qualify this baby for the November 2010 elections. And then, if all goes to plan, you’ll be able to vote on the Saturday before Election Day plus on Election Day as well, starting 2011.

Do I think that it’s some big deal that San Franciscans don’t vote all that much? No. Am I embarassed that our voting participation rate is “worse than Bulgaria’s?” No. Do I think that non-voters in America should be deined their paychecks for three months the way they do it down Bolivia Way? No.

OTOH, it wouldn’t be necessarily a bad thing to be able to vote on Saturdays as well as Tuesdays, assuming all the deets could get worked out. But As Always, You Make The Call.

Is Old Journalism Bettered by the New New Journalism – Let’s Take a Look

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I know what new journalism was back in the 1970′s but what do you call what we’re reading today? Is it new new journalism?

As an example, why not check out this bit about Justin Hughes et ux, about a local “investor” and his nameless wife, from the San Francisco Chronicle. Go ahead, take a look.

Now, Cf:

“ADOLPH HITLER and his wife EVA BRAUN, expecting twins in OCTOBER 1945, thought their plans to INVADE CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND POLAND would sail through after none of THE WESTERN POWERS came to meetings about the proposal.

Instead, THE UNITED STATES, THE UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS, AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS opposed the project using AN APPEALS MECHANISM CALLED LAND, SEA AND AIR WARFARE that cost the couple THIRTY-NINE months and FIFTEEN DIVISIONS to defend their plan to RULE THE WORLD, ADOLPH said.

I wasn’t asking for anything special,” said ‘DOLPH, AN ALMOST SUICIDAL FIFTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD ARTIST who moved back into A STATE-SUBSIDIZED BASEMENT APARTMENT last month. “I was asking FOR EQUAL RIGHTS FOR GERMAN SPEAKERS IN THE SUDETENTLAND.”

It’s easy – try it yourself with this recent story about Soutwest Airlines, a cranky mom and her two-year-old in the San Jose Mercury News. Imagine retelling the incident from the perspective of an experienced flight attendant who weighed the factors and made the call to have the noisy pair settle down before flying.

“In her fifteen years as Chief Flight Attendant, Jane Smith, expecting twins in October, had never ejected a infant from one of her aircraft. But she knew what she had to do after encountering the Wailing Banshee of Row 6….”

Or, as an alternative,  maybe we could just kick it old school, the way Mark Cicero did back in the day? You know:

“Who, what, when, where, why, in what way, by what means…”

Thusly:

Just a thot.
