Here are the 77 Michelin Guide Bay Area Bib Gourmand “Good Value” Restaurants for 2012

Full Selection to Be Announced Oct. 25

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 18, 2011 / — To whet the appetite of Bay Area residents for the sixth edition of the MICHELIN Guide San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country being released next week, Michelin announced today the 77 Bib Gourmand restaurants listed in its 2012 edition. Bib Gourmand selections are restaurants serving two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (tax and gratuity not included).

Introduced in the 1997 editions of the MICHELIN Guides in Europe, the Bib Gourmand is identified in the guide by a red symbol depicting the head of Bibendum, the Michelin Man. This year, 19 restaurants in the Bay Area are new to the Bib Gourmand category, which indicates the inspectors’ favorites for good value. The full selection of restaurants — including those garnering the famous MICHELIN stars — will be announced Tuesday, Oct. 25, when Michelin officially introduces its complete selection for the MICHELIN Guide San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country 2012. The guide will go on sale Wednesday, Oct. 26, at $18.99.

The MICHELIN Guide San Francisco, Bay Area & Wine Country 2012 covers a wider geographic region than most of its peers, stretching from Los Gatos in the south to Geyserville in the north. Over the past year, Michelin inspectors have analyzed restaurants throughout Northern California, always anonymously. MICHELIN inspectors share insights from their many meals on Twitter at @MichelinGuideSF.

OMG, It’s Judgment Day for Bay Area Restaurants! – Michelin Guide 2011 Debuting – Jean Luc Calling Area Chefs Right Now

Well, it’s finally arrived, the biggest day in high-end bay area restaurants for the entire year of 2010. It’s Opening Day for the Famously Anonymous Michelin Guide San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country Restaurants 2011.

In other words, Jean-Luc Naret, bon vivant and Director of the Michelin Guides, is on the horn giving area chefs wake-up calls, just the way the Nobel Prize Committee does it.

Not That You’d Notice, But NASCAR is in the Bay Area this Weekend up at the Infineon

NASCAR, the second-biggest car racing series in the world, is fixing to liven up bucolic Sonoma on Father’s Day.

“Celebrate Father’s Day in the Wine County at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend, June 18-20. Why give dad a necktie when you can give him the gift of Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart swapping paint on the twisting road course.”

These NASCAR posters on sale for the giveaway price of $.25 aren’t exactly blowing out the doors of our Lucky Stores. (Pepsi must think that San Francisco is just another town on the NASCAR circuit.)

Imagine NASCAR as Pixar’s Cars movie come to life – that’s the best way to describe it.

Anyway, be sure to make allowances for the crowds if you’re planning on going up to Wine Country this weekend.

(Expect Tom Cruise and son Connor (will Red Dawn ever get remade?) to be there this year the way they were last year.)

A Foie Gras Protest Coming to Napa Valley – Thomas Keller’s French Laundry Targeted

You know what Napa needs? A nice foie gras protest at The French Laundry, the finest restaurant in the West.

“The Animal Protection & Rescue League and several animal protection groups will be protesting outside Thomas Keller restaurants in three cities across the country on Saturday due to the company’s sale of “foie gras” – liver from cruelly force fed ducks. The groups will be displaying graphic banners showing scenes from inside Thomas Keller’s supplier, Hudson Valley Foie Gras, and other producers of this barbaric product. The coalition of groups, which includes the Animal Protection & Rescue League, Orange County People for Animals, In Defense of Animals, and Compassion Over Killing, have launched a campaign website at www.foie-gras-industry.com.”

So keep that in mind if you have reservations for May 8th  at any of Thomas Keller’s joints nationwide.

Thomas Keller Targeted for Animal Cruelty. Protests in NYC, Beverly Hills and Napa

NEW YORK, May 6 — The Animal Protection & Rescue League and several animal protection groups will be protesting outside Thomas Keller restaurants in three cities across the country on Saturday due to the company’s sale of “foie gras” – liver from cruelly force fed ducks.

 “As a veterinarian, I find foie gras to be a disease rather than a delicacy,” states Elliot Katz, DVM, President of IDA. “The liver’s function is to process toxins, and a liver in this grossly enlarged state from force feeding cannot function properly.”

To make the livers fat enough for foie gras, workers restrain the ducks, force long metal pipes down their throats, and pump up to two pounds of food into them per day.  After three weeks, their livers swell up to 12 times their normal size.

“The conditions I have witnessed in Hudson Valley Foie Gras are appalling,” states Bryan Pease, Esq., Board Chair of APRL.  “In visiting there and other farms to document conditions, I saw ducks panting incessantly and showing great difficulty walking and breathing in the later stages of force feeding, and I saw trash barrels full of dead ducks killed by the process.”

Animal cruelty investigations by APRL and a lawsuit filed by APRL and IDA led to enactment of Cal. Health & Safety Code section 25980, banning the sale or production of foie gras in California effective 2012. The cities of San Francisco, Berkeley, West Hollywood, Solana Beach and San Diego have recently passed resolutions in support of the ban.

Early last year, the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau found that D’Artagnan, a major U.S. foie gras distributor, was engaging in false advertising by claiming the livers are not diseased and implying the animals are treated humanely.

Murphy-Goode Winery Offers Some Economic Relief

“REALLY GOODE JOB” Pays $10,000 per month for wine country gig

 In these tumultuous economic times, finding a good job is really tough.  The Murphy-Goode Winery has a “Really Goode Job” for the right person.  The Sonoma County winery is looking for an outgoing, web-savvy, articulate communicator to tell the story of the great mountain vines and artisan winemakers of California, tasting the “goode” stuff and experiencing the unique Sonoma wine country.

“A Really Goode Job” will pay $10,000 a month for a six-month contract that includes private housing in the heart of wine country: Healdsburg, California.

Throughout the course of the job the successful applicant will learn about viticulture, winemaking, Sonoma County and Murphy-Goode wines.  He or she will prepare and post dispatches on their experiences though social media tools such as Facebook, blogs, internet videos and Twitter as well as traditional media.

The application process begins in San Francisco at 11:30 a.m. April 28 at 120 Market Street near the Hyatt Regency.  Visitors who arrive at the “A Really Goode Job’s” purple and white kiosk between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. will meet the boss, receive job tips and get a 24-hour head start in the application process by being provided with a code that will give them immediate access to the www.areallygoodejob.com web site.

On April 29 the website for job applicants will open to the public at large.  All applicants are required to complete an employment application and upload a one-minute video, demonstrating their special qualifications for the position.  (Videos more than one minute in length will not be viewed.)  Applications close on June 5, 2009 at 11 pm Pacific Time.

Murphy-Goode Winery will then select 50 candidates and from there narrow the list down to the top ten who will be interviewed from June 27 to July 1.  The person chosen for the job will be announced on July 9 and begin work on August 1.  All applicants must be at least 21 years old.

Murphy-Goode is a family-owned winery located in the heart of California’s Alexander Valley. Though laid-back and unpretentious, winemaker Dave Ready, Jr. takes immense pride in his craft, resulting in wines of the best possible quality at appropriate prices. The winery motto is: “We take our wines seriously. Ourselves….not so much.”

Visitors to the wine country are encouraged to learn more about Murphy-Goode at its brand new tasting room located at 20 Matheson Street, off the Healdsburg Square, in Healdsburg, California.

Sonoma County, located on the northern coast of California, has 13 approved American Viticultural Areas and over 450 wineries. Winemaking and grape-growing is vital to the area’s economic and cultural life. In 2006, the Sonoma County grape harvest amounted to over 185,000 tons, exceeding neighboring Napa County’s harvest by over 30 percent. The most common grape varieties planted are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir, though the area is also known for its Merlot and Zinfandel.
