Gold Mountain Mural in North Beach is Gone, Long Gone, Owing to Graffiti Vandals – Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Friday, March 9th, 2012

The news of this mural going away had escaped my attention the past couple of months.

Here’s what it looked like before….

…and here’s what it looks like now:

Here are your reading notes:

Gen Fujioka of the Chinatown Community Development Center is involved with promoting the horrible Central Subway to Nowhere.

Artist Ann Sherry is fortunate to get a five-figure commission for anything, so I’m not sure why she’s so perpetually cranky.

It’s not smart to put up images of authority figures (you know, people in military of police uniforms) in a sort of wild part of town

I don’t know, maybe this was a bad idea from the start?

I don’t know, maybe San Francisco government has lots of bad ideas, you know, from the start?

What can we learn from this episode?

Absurd: 9/11 Truthers Co-Opt Occupy Wall Street Movement – Will Try to “Occupy” World Trade Center Building 7

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Sometimes, I just don’t know.

Let’s see here, “controlled demolition,” “Building 7,” “just asking questions,” “Architects & Engineers” – nothing’s changed since 2001.

(No alarms and no surprises.)

But fresh lingo from 2011? Check.

“September 11, 2001 - the day our country was hijacked and a permanent war was launched that will not end in our lifetime unless we the 99% stop it.

Ten years later the War on Terrorism has diverted trillions of dollars from more important uses and sunken our country into debt.

Building 7, which most people don’t know about, came crashing to the ground at 5:20pm on September 11th. Today, millions of citizens and 1,600 courageous architects and engineers are demanding an investigation into the suspect destruction of this skyscraper.

The government’s absurd story that “normal office fires” felled this 47-story skyscraper is only the tip of the iceberg of the anomalies and inconsistencies we’ve been given about 9/11.

Today we are taking our country back. We will not rest until those responsible for the death of 3,000 innocent people on 9/11 are brought to justice, and the war dollars are brought home.”

Enjoy your religion, Truthers.

The Last Time an Ad in the Yellow Pages Worked: How FEMA Found an Aerial Photographer After 9/11

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

After 9/11, FEMA needed somebody to go up in a chopper every day for nine months to document recovery and removal. A certain Mr. Brown was the man for the job.

Check it, from the NYT, via Todd Lapin:

“Do you do aerial photography?” the caller asked.

“Sure,” Mr. Brown said. “If you have a plane or a helicopter.”

“We have planes and helicopters,” the caller replied.

But, “The truth was, he had never done aerial work.” Uh oh.

Nevertheless, it was all good, and the rest is history.

From before the time the telephone book industry got demolished by the Internet:

Cameras sure were big back then, huh?

Good On You, Southwest Airlines: Changes Internet Game’s “Let’s Roll” Language to “Play Now”

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Remember back a few days ago when SWA was using the “Let’s Roll” as a part of it’s frequent flier promotion?

Ah, memories:

Got bad timing? Southwest Airlines is launching a new contest as part of its frequent flier program. Hey, free or discounted travel is all good, but is “Let’s Roll!” really the best slogan they could come up with as the country nears the tenth anniversary of 9/11?”

But SWA just fixed things.

So this:

Has been changed to this:

Good for you, SWA.

(Speaking of which, SWA apparently kicked a white musician dude off of a flight yesterday due to his saggy pants, news to me. But that’s sort of funny due to some incident we had at SFO not too long ago when MR. B.M.O.C. football player totally ignored a request from a black female airline employee for said football star to pull up his saggy pants. He ended up just walking away from her. He couldn’t be bothered  because, unsurprisingly, he had luggage in his hands, or something. Said airline employee had the option to forget about it, but instead, she kicked things up a notch and the rest is history. Now, around the same time, a “faggy white boy” on a different airline in a different part of the country was allowed to fly while wearing nothing but women’s underwear, or something like that. Somehow, that “proved” something about something. Somehow, and people “know” this for sure, the black female airline employee singled out MR. B.M.O.C. due to racism. Or something like that. Oh well.)

Is the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 the Best Time For Southwest Airlines to Launch a Contest Using the Term “Let’s Roll?”

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Now I’m just a simple country lawyer so please help me when I’m trying to do the best I can to figure out why on Earth would Southwest Airlines use the term “Let’s Roll” as a part of its new frequent flier mile giveaway, you know, on the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

Thusly:

You see them – the red “LET’S ROLL” boxes? I cry foul.

Let’s double-check:

“Step 1

Go to the promotion home page.

Step 2

Enter your information in the “Current Rapid Reward Member” section (Ignore the field which says “Win Code from Card†”)

Step 3

Click ‘Let’s Roll’”

Trying the first hit on Google for “let’s roll” yields:

“‘Let’s roll‘ is a catchphrase that has been used extensively as a term to move and start an activity, attack, mission or project. After the September 11 attacks, the phrase, especially in the United States, has come to symbolize war-mongering, heroism, self sacrifice and initiative in a tough situation. This use of the phrase was inspired by Todd Beamer‘s final known words, “Are you guys ready? Let’s roll!” The phrase has been widely appropriated as a battlecry.”

Thusly:

Do you live in America, Southwest Rapid Rewards?

Sure doesn’t seem like it.

IMO, ten years is Still Too Soon.

The Longest-Lived Mural Graffiti in San Francisco – Epoxy Plus Paint Equals Forever

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Here’s what the little monsters know – they know that if they tag a big old transformer box or what have you, then it’ll simply get painted over by the City or a property owner, sometimes with a quickness. But painting over a mural, such as the one called Gold Mountain at Romolo Place in North Beach near the intersection of Columbus and Broadway, well that throws all the stakeholders into paralysis and so scribblings will remain for tout le monde to see.

Ideally, you’d have the original muralist come over and do a touchup for free. Ideally. But the long-lived tagging on Gold Mountain has epoxy in it, so it’s really hard to take off of the wall without erasing everything. And then after you do a fix-up another tagger will come along, despite your use of anti-graffiti coatings and whatnot.

Here, take a look at the mural on Romolo from six-plus years ago – nice and clean.

But WholeWheatToast‘s photo from 2008 looks just like every other recent photo that you can find online:

Here’s the current shot from Google Maps. (Note that Google’s face-blurring privacy program doesn’t distinguish betwixt real people and paintings of people.)

And the pic on MapJack looks the same as well. Oh well.

Now honestly, I’m not sure how much good putting up video cameras would do unless you had somebody to watch a live feed 24-7. I mean the value of showing the SFPD grainy night-time footage of some skinny, 5′ 8″, hoodie-wearing hood isn’t much, right?

For all I know these tags are still there today, with more added on, possibly. I’ll check it out the next time I’m in the area.

(San FranciscoThe City That Knows How®… to sit around and dawdle. Oh well.)

Leaving you with what the Chinatown Community Development Center has to say about all this:

“Gold Mountain Mural Restoration

The Gold Mountain Mural is located at Romolo Alley, near Broadway and Columbus, on the side of the Swiss American building owned and managed by Chinatown CDC. It is the joint effort of Ms. Ann Sherry, the muralist, and Chinatown CDC depicting the lives of Chinese Americans in San Francisco. It was created in 1994, and once restored in 2004 due to heavy tagging. At that time, to honor her, we added the image of our local heroine, Ms. Betty Ann Ong. Ms. Ong is the American Airline stewardess who was the first one to contact ground crew informing them of the plane being hijacked on that fatal flight into the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Recently, this historic mural caught the eyes of the President of the National Museum of Murals and Mosaics in Philadelphia, and will be featured in their online museum website.

Once again, due to tagging, we will start restoring the mural in the near future. We have so far secured some funding to install surveillance cameras to safeguard the mural. Once restoration is complete, we will daily monitor the mural and assist the SFPD to apprehend taggers. (Volunteers interested to help can contact Cathie Lam at 415-984-1461.)

Controversial Poet Amiri Baraka Coming to San Francisco’s Main Public Library This Sunday

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Poet, activist and essayist and former SFSU Lecturer Amiri Baraka (or the Amiri Baraka) is coming to the San Francisco Public Library at the Main Branch this Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m -  Koret Auditorium, 100 Larkin Street. He’ll be discussing the first year of the presidency of Barack Obama.

Interestingly, Wiki has a whole section devoted to Amiri Baraka called “controversy” – you might find it worthy of note. See below.

“The following is from a 1965 essay:

Most American white men are trained to be fags. For this reason it is no wonder their faces are weak and blank. … The average ofay [white person] thinks of the black man as potentially raping every white lady in sight. Which is true, in the sense that the black man should want to rob the white man of everything he has. But for most whites the guilt of the robbery is the guilt of rape. That is, they know in their deepest hearts that they should be robbed, and the white woman understands that only in the rape sequence is she likely to get cleanly, viciously popped.”

“More recently he has replied to questions about this quote with:

Those quotes are from the essays in Home, a book written almost fifty years ago. The anger was part of the mindset created by, first, the assassination of John Kennedy, followed by the Assassination of Patrice Lumumba, followed by the assassination of Malcolm X amidst the lynching, and national oppression. A few years later, the assassination of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. What changed my mind was that I became a Marxist, after recognizing classes within the Black community and the class struggle even after we had worked and struggled to elect the first Black Mayor of Newark, Kenneth Gibson”

So much for ancient history. Here’s a bit from this decade:

“Amiri Baraka was Poet Laureate of New Jersey at the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks. He wrote a poem titled “Somebody Blew Up America” about the event. The poem was controversial and highly critical of racism in America, and includes angry depictions of public figures such as Trent Lott, Clarence Thomas, and Condoleezza Rice. The poem also contains lines claiming Israel’s involvement in the World Trade Center attacks:

Who knew the World Trade Center was gonna get bombed
Who told 4000
Israeli workers at the Twin Towers
To stay home that day
Why did
Sharon stay away?
[...]
Who know why Five Israelis was filming the explosion
And cracking they sides at the notion

O.K. fine. Here are the deets from the SPL:

“In a rare West Coast appearance, poet, playwright, essayist and political activist Amiri Baraka will deliver a historic speech on the nation’s first African-American president, Barack Obama, at the San Francisco Public Library. Appearing this Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Main Library’s Koret Auditorium, 100 Larkin St., San Francisco, Baraka’s presentation is titled, “We Are Already in the Future! Barack Obama: Year One.”

In 2008, during the primary and general election cycles, Baraka surprised, delighted and provoked his friends and enemies with a series of rigorous, inventive and powerfully deciphering essays on then-candidate Obama. With this unique event, Baraka will revisit those essays, and bring his keen, and always original, interpretation of the Obama Presidency in its first year.

A transitional figure from the Beat Generation and Civil Rights Era, Baraka is known as the father of the Black Arts Movement. Baraka is also one of the true giants of international poetry and a towering presence in the U.S. The talk will be immediately followed by a discussion with literary producer Justin Desmangles, and conclude with a question and answer session with the audience.

Historic Commonwealth Club Embarrasses Itself with the 911 Truth Crowd

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

San Francisco’s own Commonwealth Club, America’s “oldest and largest public affairs forum,” will thoroughly embarrass itself by hosting “Richard Gage: 9/11 Blueprint for Truth, Reexamining the WTC Collapses” this Tuesday, September 8, 2009.

So, it’s been 106 years of public affairs, but now this:

asdf copy

Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth” - why just those people? (Hey, weren’t architects the ones responsible for San Francisco’s failed Octavia Boulevard? Sadly, yes.) While we’re at it, why not invite representatives from the whole pantheon of 911 Truth craziness? You know, Veterans for 9/11 Truth or Pilots for 9/11 Truth or Scholars for 9/11 Truth or Scholars for 9/11 Truth (the other one) or Firefighters for 9/11 Truth or Liars for 9/11 Truth?

The 9/11 conspiracy virus swept the world back in 2007 – more than a few scarecrows got bayonetted back then. But hasn’t that whole movement started to die off? And how about this:

These people (in the 9/11 truth movement) use the ‘reverse scientific method‘… they determine what happened, throw out all the data that doesn’t fit their conclusion, and then hail their findings as the only possible conclusion.”

Oh well.

“Richard Gage, AIA, Founder, Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth

Five years after the 9/11 Commission published its report, some people question the official findings on what brought down the World Trade Center. In a multimedia program, Gage contends that forensic evidence and eyewitness testimony reveal explosive-controlled demolition of the WTC skyscrapers on 9/11. Fact or fiction? Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Gage’s bold and controversial address, and have the chance to put your tough questions to the speaker.”

What’s next after the Truthers, Commonwealth Club? The Birthers? Why not equal time for the Birthers?

Or the Thomson Reuters Water Car people? Let’s have them next.

And speaking of scams, let’s have the Platinum Gas Saver dude come to S.F. to say a few words as well. And here’s how the CC would address the concomitant blowback from booking a guest direct from FantasyLand:

“‘Fact or fiction? Don’t miss this opportunity to hear [Platinum Gas Saver dude' s] bold and controversial address, and have the chance to put your tough questions to the speaker.”

Ah yes, palliative cliches. Does a spoonful of sugar make ridiculous bookings go down the throat any easier?

No, no it doesn’t.

In closing, HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

9-11 Truth March Comes Through San Francisco, Once Again

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Well, it’s the beginning of September, so it must be time for another 911 Truth March in Golden Gate Park.

Turnout was better than last year, based upon this 2007 report from Zombietime, that dude from Berkeley. (Of course, Zombietime.com started as a “platform to expose the craziness that has emerged on the left side of the political spectrum since 9/11,” so don’t expect sweetness and nice at that site.)

It’s hard to say just how this ridiculous conspiracy theory will hold up when compared with the tried-and-true JFK and Pearl Harbor conspiracy theories.

Of course you are free to read the San Francisco Chronicle and then believe that “…there is simply no way 19 [people] with box cutters sent by some [person] could have pulled off the most perfectly orchestrated air attack of the century.”

Your choice.
