High Fees Drive Yet Another Music Festival Out of Golden Gate Park: Power to the Peaceful 2012 Canceled

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Why is it that fees get waived for unpopular events like Larry Ellison’s boat race next year* and yet fees get increased for popular events like the formerly-annual Power to the Peaceful?

I don’t know.

Anyway, this is what it looked like. Well, this was a yoga heavy warm-up, but the actual event attracted huge crowds and people like Alanis Morissette would play for free:

And this is why it’s gone:

“Due to rising city fees which have ballooned our operating costs over the past years, we regrettably announce that The Power to the Peaceful Festival will not be staged in September of 2012.

In what would have been our 13th year of free festivals in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park the only way to have produce the festival this year would have been to turn it into a ticketed event. We wish to thank all of our supporters and volunteers and look forward to the next chapter of the Power To The Peaceful team working to promote peace and positivity in our community at future events.”

Oh well.

So why is Power to the Peaceful considered so bad and why is the America’s Cup considered so good?

Perhaps because Mayor Ed Lee mostly cares about the boat-loving billionaires and millionaires who give money and support to his campaigns?

*What are we paying for this thing? $10 million? $20 million? More?

Crystal Bowersox Guest Stars at Michael Franti’s Power to the Peaceful Festival 2010

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Our annual Yelp-rated Power to the Peaceful music festival went off without a hitch (except for the PTTP website, from which it was hard to get useful information, but oh well.)

I got there too early and had to leave but Luke Thomas has a brace of photos here at the Fog City Journal. See? Loads of people.

Here’s what it was like early on:

Yoga to start the day:

Just hundreds of yoga-ites:

And here’s CB herself.

Then it got sunnier and then it got a lot colder by the end of the day. That’s the west si-iiide for you…

Oh, here’s the lineup, after the fact:

See you next year!

There’s an after party tonight and more stuff going on tomorrow Sunday:

The day will end with the official PTTP Afterparty at The Fillmore in San Francisco where Michael Franti will present The Rocking Heads – see Michael and special guest musicians rock the stage performing classic Talking Heads songs.

On Sunday, September 12th, The Fillmore will play host to a morning of Yoga & Brazilian Arts Workshops with yoga led by Seane Corn and Michael Franti along with Afro-Brazilian dance with Master Teacher Rosangela Silvestri. 12th Annual Power to the Peaceful Festival Set for September 10-12, 2010 in Golden Gate Park

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Well, there’s a whole long story involving the annual 911 Power to the Peaceful Festival in Golden Gate Park and the number 911 – it involves Mumia, the World Trade Center attack and the number you dial for the police. But forget all that cause it appears as if that particular number is off of the official title for this event for good.

So, these days, it’s just PTTP, Power to the Peaceful.

This year, the main day of the  fest will be, wait for it, Saturday, September 11th, 2010.

This toddler on the side of a MUNI bus on San Francisco’s Market Street is shown all by her lonesome finding inner peace via yoga in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge. (Thank goodness all the trash was removed by that “Save the Bay” shooting crew.)
